Henry Hussey’s ‘The Sickness’ has been installed at Palazzo Monti, Brescia, Italy as part of their current ‘BAN-NERS’ Project, taking over the facade of the Palazzo. The siting of the piece follows Hussey’s recent residency at Palazzo Monti, which took place as the Coronavirus epidemic began to take hold in the region.

Hussey says of the work: “'The Sickness’ was created in response to my nations involvement in the war in the Yemen, which took form in the fact that Saudi Arabia is one of the largest acquirers of the United Kingdom's arm exports. I also drew inspiration from the filmmaker Adam Curtis and the constructed nature of the world post-WW2 and the West's relationship with the middle-east in general. The work is an acknowledgement that one must take responsibility for the actions of their nation or tribe and engage with the foundations of their society no matter how troubling those foundations are... Viewing the work presently I was fascinated at how the context and connotations of it had changed. Sickness archetypically leads to upheaval and change whether this be Moses bringing the plagues to Egypt or conquistadors arriving in South America. Catastrophes can reveal the truth whether it be underlining problems within a society or give rise to the innate goodness in humanity . The work is a warning yet equally a call to try to be better both on an individual basis and communally. The sickness could offer a chance to reassess and grow as a society beyond the suffering.”
