INTRODUCTION :
Embodying a natural and intuitive, seemingly naive, yet extremely complex aesthetic, Gabrielle K Brown is a multi-faceted, multi-media artist who eagerly and energetically seeks new ways to tell stories through her artworks. Her pieces retain an object, often shrine-like quality, utilising materials including wood, various paints, resin, fabrics and even hair - nothing is beyond limits. The works dissect the relationship we have with ourselves, our companions, our society and our past with an awe and celebration of nature and the divine, shedding light on how we grow and how we suffer as human beings. Confrontational imagery is often contrasted with uplifting symbolism, actions and words - emphasising the extremes of the human condition and experience, and yearning within the energetic and fraught times that we live in.
Born in 1994 on the east coast of Canada in New Brunswick, Brown grew up along the riverside and mountains which is where she connected to art and began painting and sculpting. She has spent much of her life traveling the world and moving throughout Canada which has always reflected in her work, but has recently moved back home to St John, the oldest city in Canada.Work has been exhibited at Art Basel Miami, as well as Montreal and New York and LA in the United States.

“She who eats the soup is a symbol of fuelling the body to continue on. She is half clothed and half naked as she seeks balance between the nature of being human and being sexualized. She births the leopard attacking the alligator firstly as a symbol of the cycle of life and secondly as the battle between the two beasts within us. Also the leopard is there to bring healing and is a counselor in difficult times. When all seems lost, the Leopard comes to help us take back our Power. The alligator is the keeper and protector of all knowledge. It is the end of one period in our life and the beginning of something new. Wile E. Coyote is approaching her with his knife and fork as he desires her soup, this hungry energy is mass consumption that stems from the western culture and it demonstrates how humans always seem to need what someone else is experiencing. Wile E. Coyote could also be viewed as a character that is hungry to be in touch with his true nature, he notices the connection she has within herself and he would like that as well. The table is bare except for one other Looney Tunes character, Sylvester, he is shocked as he notices the man shaving in the doorway. This man is the main subject’s old lover, he has lost touch with the world around him and has let his ego take control. He is shaving his pubic hair to try and cleanse himself from past patterns. As he does so he is being whispered to by the devil but it is unclear whether he is listening or not. The man shaving can also represent how we all can be approached by things of a darker nature and it is up to us if we choose to hear it or not. The prehistoric animal skulls are the connection we have to our past while the painting above is the symbol of our inner child and our relationship to God itself. Outside is the volcano erupting, this is the world in chaos, but being inside within the wooden walls is the home of the spirit, where regardless of the destruction there is always a place of peace. Above are the mountain tops, this is the viewpoint from our spirit, if we can keep ourselves elevated and see things from a higher perspective we may be less affected by what we experience on the ground. Marty Stouffer’s Wild America is showcasing the connection between what’s real and what isn’t, this is a visual representation of the commercial use in today’s cultures which is contrasting humans being in touch with the wild and their true nature. The great protectors which surround the painting are the angels that guide us, they hold the snake from birth until adulthood as both a symbol of growth and of our inner power.“

“The great mother that nurtures her young sprouts like a tree towards the heavens, she comes as a symbol of mother earth and she holds the explosion in her spirit as a reminder of her force. Her face shows the reflection of a man, a cowboy from the west who has lost all hope and looks to her for answers, much like many of us do throughout our life. The snake is being called down by the snake-charmer, meeting its match.. the eagles, this can be seen as the forces we should embrace. The snake is the sign of fertility, rebirth and renewal as the eagle is showing us a higher perspective, manifestation and sexual power. Below them is the great buffalo hunt, the hunting and processing of the bison became amongst the most important ways for Great Plains Amerindian cultures to pass on their knowledge, prayers, and traditions. The bison was so integral to Amerindian life that many societies treated bison as a spiritual relative of their people. This is a reminder to us all on how we need to be connected both physically and spiritually to the animals and the land as to nurture the cycle is a part of nurturing ourselves. Above is a man experiencing a moment of joy, the dogs licking his face are allowing us to see that we don’t need to take life so seriously, to be present and find happiness in the small things. The dartboard on his head is targeting how we tend to focus on what the mind is saying and not enough on what the spirit is saying. Above him is the story of Moses talking to God as the burning bush, this is a reflection on being connected to a higher power, something that already exists within us but also will reveal itself in outward forms as a reminder of the direction we should take. The tigers battling are the opposing forces we can experience within, it is in that which we seek balance. The car escaping on fire is the act of fleeing from one’s problems, when we ignore our inner voice and are numbing the pain, but with the two twins worshiping the heart is how we will always come back to love and the balance will be found. The dove flying is God’s presence watching over as the cycle goes around and around. The heaven within is home sweet home.”

“There is light in all of life’s moments, no part is accidental, there are many turns that open us up to the heavens by being in the present moment, it always will lead to one’s freeness. Whether it is the moment where two people cross paths, marriage, baptisms, police brutality, a moment of loss when you thought you would win, a battle between two Komodo dragons or even the day you were pushed on a swing after everything has ended, all is not lost, there are answers to be found if we seek them. All of these experiences, even if they are not felt personally, are conversations with ourselves, an opportunity to see how creation works and our power in those moments. This is a story about life itself and with life comes death. The journey from the bottom where she has lost her lover to a car crash brings him up into his glory, he reaches for the God’s to send him to mens nite where he reunites with his ancestors and he is surrounded by all that he loves, which is to say that God is wrapping his light around him. She is being guided back on earth by the Bruce Willis spirit guide which represents a few things, Bruce Willis portrays strength and the dog symbolizes loyalty to the truth, he comes to comfort and protect her as she moves through loss back into the light. The four corners are the wisdom experts, Jesus, Hare Krishna, Buddha and the Pig Devil, all serving as teachers to every part of us. We must move through the cycle of life, from moment to moment to understand the answers we are looking for.”

“Sometimes we have to walk away from connections that make us feel alive. Many emotions come from this kind of experience, when we lose a person that we hold close to our hearts we feel the suffering from that loss but through memories we feel the joy. The saying, all you can eat and world famous pies is about how we over consume when we are engaged with strong energy, even if it isn’t positive. Then overtop it says, I would live and die a thousand times just to walk with you, which is also playing into the part of us that does not want to let go and would live in pain and die just to keep the connection alive. The eagle comes down as a protector of the female subject, the eagle could also be seen as God or the creator and is the element of a higher form of wisdom. Below are the words eagles fly, eagles moan too, which refers to our spirit and our flesh, some days we soar and other days we cry. The angel pointing to the pie has lost her arm, she has lost part of herself but is reborn after being in an elevator of emotions, she was carrying the pain of the women and she has now chosen to smile and be hopeful despite part of her body being gone. The male subject does not know what he truly wants, he is still discovering himself on his journey. That is why there is both a gun and a Tasmanian Devil hungry for pie, the gun is his truth turned towards love but there is a side to him that is feeding into his earthly desires. Between their feet is a thirsty dragon, the dragon is a symbol of power over the elements which tells us there is always a place where we can access this strength within ourselves. The women with symbols on their chests and back are there to support the dragon we all carry in our spirits. Even when a connection is lost in the physical world there will always be a dragon inside you that will strengthen you to carry on.”

“The one who is connected to who they are, in mind, body and spirit is free. This sculpture is a representation of how when we nurture the truth within us we can walk through fire. The small being that is held is his inner child, he carries it proudly as to say that he is allowing it to guide him but also is protecting it. The circles of energy sprout up his arms and the blood rushes to his face as he feels both his spirit and the emotions from the outside world. His hair is made from horse hair, this connects him to healing and freedom. The Nike check mark symbol is him just doing it, he doesn’t hold back and goes after what he wants. The women gather around his head as a crown of the feminine energy, the symbol of the life-giving force that exists in all of us. The women who carry fruit on his legs are there to show how we should be of good service to ourselves and to those around us, the scorpions are the balance between life and death. The tattoos he has are his connection to both his spirit and his flesh, he uses them as a way to showcase his personality and the beliefs he feels connected to. In totality this sculpture is a mirror to the dance we all do throughout this life, in one form or another. His message is to let the spirit be the guide and to live from the truth within.”

“We must always return back to the spirit, the spirit that births us and what brightens our heart. The individual journey is very special, along the way we may feel as if there are many knives digging into us, this pain we feel is our emotions breaking through but also is a sign of our inner strength. If we can keep our focus on the present moment and allow peace to flow around us and through us like water then we may let go of the pain we are experiencing. The armour the main subject is wearing is how we protect ourselves from harm and the albino tiger on her belt is a symbol of spiritual enlightenment and courage. Branching out from her head are two wings, to help her stay above the noise of the mind and the world. The collision above her head is the two energies that exist within us colliding. This is the moment where she will decide what path she will take but first she must observe what is happening around her. On one island are the monks that hug and the monks that fist fight, one is an act of love and the other is an act of violence, sometimes we choose to love ourselves and sometimes we are hurtful to ourselves, it is up to us which side we wish to feed. The island across is an experience the main subject had, she is hanging upside-down from a tree, she has been tied there and the blood is rushing to her head, this is the consequence when we overwork ourselves and give too much into the expectations of our earthly reality. Only she can cut the rope and set her body free. On the third island is the main subject without her armour, she is enjoying herself as she sips on a glass of milk, the milk is referencing the fluid of eternal life and she is giving back to herself that which she lost in the tree. The man playing bagpipes is also a side of her inner self, her masculine energy, the music being played is a reminder of the harmony we can share when taking some time to be still. The moral of this piece is to take care of ourselves, nurture the spirit first and it will flow into the body and mind. This opens the door for us to be of good service to the world around us.”

“When we are greeted by a lover we present all that we are, who we were and could be. The main subject is looking towards his mate in curiosity rather than with eyes that are looking to feast. The blood rushing to his fingertips presents the idea that he is interested in understanding the life-giving force and the nature of it. He begins to see past the physical form and recognizes the door in which he slid through. He becomes more and more aware of himself, his mother and father and his ancestors. He sees the face of the creator smiling back at him. His body is adorned with experiences he’s had, his beliefs and the trials and triumphs of the life he’s lived so far. He is a map of his own creation. The eagle wraps around his head to keep him protected from worldly influences and because of that he has a balancing mechanism that teeters between light and darkness. The ghost of his past self has lifted and is returning to the television where the three headed beast lives. It must go back into the realm of commercialization and the force-fed clutter that clogs the mind. For this is what he consumed before he arrived to this present moment. The window at the bottom reveals a woman carrying a bowl of fruit that she is dropping because she is being struck by a man, this is a reflection on how hard we can be on ourselves as well as the dynamics of a relationship when a person does not take care of themselves. But the top window is the same woman proud to be free, she has picked up her fruit and is calling out to the wolves, she has found her place on the mountaintops. The dark energy has returned to its rightful place as well which is inside the ring of fire, there he cannot escape the cycle of the karma he created unless he calls out to the wolves himself. The guardian dog angels are observant and filled with energy, they serve as a reminder of the powerful forces that exist in other realms and can be called upon at any given moment. The relationship between both subjects is about understanding the truth in ourselves and those around us, it is speaking on how we can release past habits so that we can be nurtured by the essence that gives life.”

“The pain we feel on this earth is always balanced by moments of transcendence. Whenever we let go of who we think we should be and what we should be doing, we will see our spirit be set free. It is by releasing what we are holding onto in the mind and to harness the essence of the eagle. The eagle will help us speak wisdom out of our mouths so that we can be lifted up towards the mountains. The snake coming from her head is a message of rebirth. The immortal beings leaving her head and flowing down the river are the parts of herself that she needs to let go of in order to become lighter. They are there as a service to her but also she must shed them to allow new energy to enter. Going up towards heaven there is a skull master hiding in the mountains, he is a reminder of death but also is bringing balance. As he sacrifices his earthly self his energy bolts up to the sky where two of God’s cupid angels are. They are charged up to spread more love and peace to the world. Between both the earthly dimension and the heavenly dimension is the creator also known as super chain, he sits on his motorcycle observing all that he is part of down below. Within the chaos there will always be harmony, it is up to us to choose what side we lean on.”

ENQUIRE ABOUT THIS WORK
“In a place where the love of oil has taken over the land the only hope comes from the watchful eye of God up above and the power of the shark within the ocean below. Sam’s Variety is the source of peace in the painting and is grounding amidst all the madness as it represents a setting that we all know well, the convenience stores that serve us basic needs. The woman in front of the store is stopping traffic to stretch, this is her way of restoring balance within herself and is sending a message to those around her to be aware of themselves and what they put their attention towards. The man who got out of the car is mad because he has yet to wake up consciously, so he doesn’t understand himself and therefore does not understand her. The devil lurking in the store is the cheetah stalking its prey, the devil eats his ice-cream watching the chaos unfold as this is what he wished for. All the greedy men fighting for oil do not see anything else but the oil and will do anything for it, this is the dark existence some experience in this world, blinded by reality, money and propaganda. The mountains tell us about the source of creation, the place where we all must return to when all is lost. It is also there because it wants us to climb and to strive for greater things. Two have made it to the tops, one is a woman revealing her breast, which is both a move that shows she is confident in her sexuality as well as being comfortable with the part of her body that feeds and nurtures, both are valuable. The man chopping the mountain is telling us how the mountain also is not real, the challenges we create and this mountain we always believe to be climbing is all created from the mind. But his ability to cut it is showing us that anything is possible. The two oil men holding swords are announcing that they are dedicated to the one within, the creator, they have left their life of greed behind them and their swords point to the heavens as a sign of love and respect for the truth.”
